The primary aim of this grant is to provide temporary relief to individuals facing financial hardships due to the pandemic.
SASSA also administers other grants, including the Old Age Grant, Disability Grant, and Child Support Grant. These grants offer financial aid to individuals who satisfy specific requirements related to age, disability, or income levels. Applications for these grants can be submitted through the SASSA website or at their offices, with online application options and safety measures, such as social distancing, in place to safeguard applicants during the pandemic.
In addition to financial assistance, SASSA provides support services to grant beneficiaries, including access to healthcare and funeral benefits. These services are designed to enhance the quality of life for vulnerable individuals and families in South Africa.
However, there has been a delay in disbursing payments for the new round of the SRD grant, which commenced on April 1 and has been extended until March 2023. SASSA plans to distribute payments in mid-June after addressing the distribution of other social funds. This delay is a consequence of the Department of Social Development’s decision to introduce a means test for the subsequent phase of administering the grant. This means test necessitates new agreements with banks to verify the financial balances of applicants, aiming to ensure that families with a member earning R350 or more per month do not qualify for the grant.
