Situated along the renowned Garden Route and in the Little Karoo, South Cape TVET College, also recognized as SCC, spans a vast catchment area of 80,822 km2, standing as the largest among the six TVET Colleges in the Western Cape.
SCC is comprised of six campuses, strategically positioned across the Garden Route and the Klein Karroo District. These encompass Beaufort West Campus, Bitou Campus situated in Plettenberg Bay, George Campus, Hessequa Campus in Riversdale, Mossel Bay Campus, and Oudtshoorn Campus. Campus management and coordination are overseen by the central office located in George, where the senior management team is also headquartered.
Established in 2000, the institution played a pivotal role in piloting college mergers in South Africa. SCC emerged as a culmination of the merger of the following educational institutions:
- George Technical College, founded in 1968.
- Oudtshoorn Technical College, established in 1981.
- South Cape Technical Institute in George, which commenced operations in the early 1980s.
- Mossel Bay College, initiated as a satellite of Oudtshoorn Technical College in 1993.
The successful integration of the SCC amalgamation set the stage for subsequent college mergers starting in 2002. However, transitions like the merger of South Cape TVET College were accompanied by various challenges. With the establishment of a Central Office and the transformation of previous Technical Colleges into campuses of a larger institution, staff members had to adapt to the evolving landscape.
In 2007, colleges introduced a novel educational pathway, the National Certificate Vocational (NCV) field. These qualifications were tailored for students who had previously discontinued their studies after Grade 9. SCC initiated around ten of these pioneering programs with intakes at the George, Mossel Bay, and Oudtshoorn campuses. While the introduction of these new qualifications led to the phase-out of National N Diploma Courses across all campuses at the time, policy adjustments later prompted their reinstatement.
