UFS Online application requirements 2024-2025
For detailed information about the application requirements for the 2024-2025 UFS Online, please refer to this page.
The University of the Free State has specific prerequisites for enrollment, including:
- Holding an NSC, NCV, or an equivalent qualification that qualifies you for degree programs, such as a Bachelor’s degree.
- Fulfilling all the prerequisites for your chosen program. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission due to limited available spots.
- Attaining a minimum proficiency level of 4 (50%) in English or Afrikaans, which are the languages of instruction for certain programs.
- Meeting specific subject requirements and achieving a minimum grade to enroll in particular university modules. For instance, if you intend to major in physics and take engineering courses, you need to have a grade point average of 70% in grade 12 mathematics. Refer to the faculty-specific admission requirements for a comprehensive list of prerequisite subjects and proficiency standards for each program.
Important information for all students:
- Apply as early as possible to secure a spot since availability is limited. Failure to meet deadlines may result in rejection or inability to register.
- Academic achievement is highly valued, and higher AP scores enhance the chances of selection and admission. However, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
- Submit a complete application with all the necessary supporting documents to avoid delays.
- Transferring students should include their official study record and conduct certificate.
- International students must provide additional documents, including a conditional exemption certificate issued by the Matriculation Board.
- Conditional admission may be offered based on Grade 11 or equivalent results, but not all programs in the Faculty of Health Sciences offer this option.
- Final admission to the desired program is determined based on Grade 12 results, and you will be notified of the decision after the release of those results.
- Your admission point (AP) total is calculated based on the NSC achievement scale, with points awarded for certain achievement levels.
- Before applying, carefully review the admission requirements for your chosen program, and note that achievement levels below 30% in academic subjects do not earn points. Life Orientation at achievement level 5 (60%) or higher receives one point when calculating the AP score for admission.
NSC Level | UFS AP |
7 (90%–100%) | 8 |
7 (80%–89%) | 7 |
6 (70%–79%) | 6 |
5 (60%–69%) | 5 |
4 (50%–59%) | 4 |
3 (40%–49%) | 3 |
2 (30%–39%) | 2 |
1 (0%–29%) | – |
To calculate your AP, you can use the following example: | |
For five (5) academic subjects, you must obtain a level 5 (60%) | 5 x 5 = 25 |
For one (1) further academic subject, you must obtain a level 4 (50%) | 1 x 4 = 4 |
For Life Orientation, a level of 5 (60%) or higher to score 1 point | 1 x 1 = 1 |
UFS overall AP score | = 30 |
