The University of the Witwatersrand, commonly known as Wits University or simply Wits, is a public, multi-campus university located on the northern edge of Johannesburg’s city center. The university has deep roots in the mining industry, reflecting the history of Johannesburg and the Witwatersrand region. It was initially established as the South African School of Mines in Kimberley in 1896, making it the third oldest university in South Africa that is still operational.

Opening and closing dates for Wits Application Confirmation

Applications for the class of 2025 will be accepted from May to August. The application fee of R100 is required for South African citizens and is non-refundable. Foreign citizens are required to pay a non-refundable application fee of R700. Payments must be made before the specified deadlines. Use your Person Number or T Number as a reference when making payments. Please ensure you include any supporting documentation that can assist in the application process.

If you did not upload supporting documents during the initial application, you can now do so through the student self-service portal at https://self-service.wits.ac.za. To log in, use your personal number (not your T number) and the first six digits of your ID. Current students: Please submit your final grades for 11th grade electronically—no hard copy is required. If you have already logged in, upload certified copies of all your graduation and exit certificates. Additional Postsecondary Institutions: Upload certified copies of your official academic transcripts and a statement or certificate attesting to your good moral character. Each document should be stamped by the school’s registrar. Please note that only the initial assessment will consider interim, self-service-generated results for GEMP applicants.
