UKZN Accommodation for Students 2024-2025

UKZN Student Accommodation allows students to experience luxury living on the beautiful University of KwaZulu-Natal campus. The following online platforms provide comprehensive coverage of multiple campuses for prospective students.

Accommodation for students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal

  • Edgewood Residences at the Edgewood campus offer various options, including catering and self-catering. There are 11 dormitories on campus, accommodating a total of 631 students. The dormitories separate men and women, with women making up 55% of the population. Both single and double rooms are available, and some apartments provide self-catering facilities. Access control doors are installed in all residences. Graduate students have access to five additional apartments, each accommodating five students.

Howard College & Medical School On-Campus Residences

  • Howard College and Medical School in Durban provides on-campus accommodation for approximately 2162 students. Due to high demand, not all applicants may be accepted. The two residences available are Charles Smith Hall and Albert Luthuli Hall. Charles Smith Hall consists of 12 homes conveniently located near major academic buildings, banks, shops, and the medical school. Albert Luthuli Hall includes the six-story Cluster Residence and Tower Residence in the western part of the Howard College campus. These residences are close to sports fields and the Old Mutual sports center. Amenities include access control, lounges, TV rooms, intercoms, telephone booths, and parking.

Off-Campus Residences

  • Mixed Gender Residence – St Hillier St Hillier apartments provide furnished two and three-bedroom units, with each student having their own bedroom. The living room, kitchen, and bathroom are shared among the residents. There is a parking lot and coin laundry available. St. Hillier is located in Ambiro, directly opposite Queensmead Shopping Center and a short walk from the medical school campus. It is accessible via the Howard College bus route.

J V Smit Residence

  • J V Smit Residence offers 90 spacious single rooms, as well as entertainment and study areas and tennis courts. Catering services are provided. Laundry facilities and parking are available. The residence is close to the medical school campus and is connected to Howard College and downtown via a bus route.

Pietermaritzburg

  • The student residence in Pietermaritzburg accommodates around 1,640 students, with a third of the enrolled students living in one of the four residences. For assistance with off-campus housing, students can contact the Student Housing Helpdesk.

Petrie Hall Of Residence

  • Petrie Hall primarily accommodates 1st and 2nd-grade students. Eleanor Russell Hall, University Hall, and Lodge are three large residences located near Science Block, Administration, Student Union, Library, Tennis Court, Shops, Post Office, and Banks. The Student Committee oversees the management of student life in all the residences.

William O’Brien Hall Of Residence

  • William O’Brien Hall Of Residence, exclusively for male students, is located on campus. It consists of single rooms spread over six blocks with communal kitchens. The residence offers sports programs, senior and junior lounges, a spacious community play area, and a visitor reception hall for extracurricular activities. Additional facilities include a braai area, car repairs, washing areas, and secure parking for residents’ vehicles.

Malherbe Hall Of Residence

  • The Malherbe Residence accommodates both male and female students. It is situated across Durban Road from the University Gate. The common areas and TV lounge are unisex. The residence is surrounded by trees, shrubs, and grass, providing space for students to engage in ball games and relaxation. A barbecue area is also available. The residence is within walking distance of the student hall, science block, old art block, shops, banks, and post office. However, certain blocks like the New Arts Block, Commerce, Law, Agriculture, and Life Sciences Blocks require a 10-minute walk. Malherbe Flats, known as Brucian House and Robleigh House, cater to graduate students. These flats have 3, 4, or 5 bedrooms, making them ideal for small groups of students who wish to live together. Room sharing is not allowed, and most rooms are fully equipped and independent. Lockable garages are available for rent.

Denison Hall Of Residence

  • Denison Hall, open to both men and women, is located in a quiet park-like setting on the old golf course section of the campus. Denison has its own kitchen complex and clubhouse, featuring a spacious standard room and the Denison bar. Additional amenities include a gym, TV room, billiards, and table tennis.

Westville

  • The Westville campus offers both off-campus and self-catering apartments, as well as on-campus residences with meal services upon request.

On-Campus Residences

  • There are 1810 students accommodated on the Westville campus. Due to high demand, not all applicants may be accepted. The four residential blocks available are S-Block, R-Block, P-Block, and O-Block. O-Block is exclusively reserved for women, while the others are mixed-gender residences. Each residence features access control, television rooms, and parking. Except for O-Block, which still includes a restaurant, all apartments are self-contained.

Off-Campus Residences

  • 713 students reside in off-campus housing. Competition for these units is intense, and not all applications can be accepted. These units come fully equipped. PhD students can apply for a single room if available, otherwise, all students share double rooms. Kitchen and bathroom facilities are shared among the tenants. Bedford Hall and Sun Savile Mansion are located on Hospital Road in the city, while Dunstaple Heights is situated on Varsity Drive. Santa Cruz caters specifically to graduate students and is located in Reservoir Hills.
  • Admission to Residences Applications Local first-year applicants must apply to the Central Applications Office (CAO) for admission to university residences. Separate applications are not required, although it is not always possible to accommodate students in their preferred residence.
  • International students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal must also apply for accommodation.
  • The deadline for accommodation applications is September 30th.

Selection

  • Selection for residence placement is based on factors such as financial need, academic potential, and distance from home. However, the university cannot guarantee dormitory placement, and students accepted into the university may need to arrange off-campus accommodation.
  • A Resident Code of Conduct is mandatory for all students.

Residence Fees

In 2021, accommodation costs amounted to an annual living allowance of R25,892. Local students were required to pay a deposit of R2750 (2018), excluding meal expenses (approximately R23,980 per year). International students were required to pay 25% of their accommodation costs before registration. Student accommodation does not provide bed linen.

Meals Self-catering facilities are available in all residences at Pietermaritzburg, Howard College, Edgewood, and Westville. Students are responsible for preparing their own meals. Students should bring their own crockery, cutlery, pots, and cooking utensils. Additionally, there are dining options on campus. Westville campus provides meal services in on-campus apartments, while Edgewood offers self-catering accommodation.

Linen, Laundry, And Cleaning Students are required to bring their own linens and towels. Each residence has its own laundry facilities, and students are responsible for cleaning their own rooms.

Vacations Students can apply to stay in the dormitories during vacations. Fee details can be obtained from the residence office.
