In 1996, the seminary was established by Dr. Christopher Peppler. It is a founding member of the National Association of Distance Education Organizations in South Africa (NADEOSA). SATS offers various programs that are accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and registered with the South African Department of Higher Education and Training. The quality of their qualifications is comparable to the regional accreditation system in the United States. SATS has the authority to grant qualifications up to the doctorate level, including undergraduate programs such as Bachelor of Theology (B.Th.), Higher Certificate in Christian Counseling, Higher Certificate in Christian Life, and Bachelor of Theology with a Christian counseling concentration. They also offer postgraduate programs like B.Th. Honors, M.Th., Master of Divinity, and Doctorate in Theology.

SATS is spiritually overseen by the elders of The Village Church, which was founded by Rosebank Union Church. The theological approach followed by the seminary is generally evangelical. The mission of the South African Religious Theological School is to provide Scripture-based, Christ-focused, and Spirit-led distance education and training to Christians, particularly those within their local church communities. The goal is to equip them to be fully engaged members of God’s family.

South African Theological Seminary Programmes

• Higher Certificate in Christian Life (120 credits, NQF 5).The HCCL is akin to the introductory year of the BTh program. It provides a strong foundational base for both life and ministry. Additionally, it serves as an entry point to tertiary education for students who may not meet the BTh entry requirements.
• Higher Certificate in Christian Counselling (120 credits, NQF 5). The HCCL is an all-inclusive program designed for lay and pastoral counselors.
• Bachelor of Theology (360 credits, NQF 7). The BTh is a theology degree that spans three years. Currently, we provide two options: a general BTh, which is well-suited for pastors, missionaries, and Bible teachers, and a specialization in Christian counseling.
• Bachelor of Theology Honours (360 credits, NQF 8). The BTh Hons is a first postgraduate degree. It builds on a BTh and prepares students for theological research in the MTh.
• Master of Divinity (240 credits, NQF 9), forthcoming. The MDiv program is tailored to cater to the advanced practical training needs of pastors. It is particularly suitable for second-career pastors as prior qualifications in theology are not a requirement for admission.
• Master of Theology (180 credits, NQF 9). The MTh is an advanced research degree that focuses on specialized studies within theological fields. It is well-suited for individuals with aspirations of becoming theology educators and serves as a stepping stone toward pursuing a Ph.D. in theology.
• Doctor of Philosophy (360 credits, NQF 10). The Ph.D. represents the highest level of research-oriented academic achievement. Our Ph.D. program is centered around a dissertation.
